“Order and Disorder”
Quality living and learning spaces is central to the operation of universities. This project investigates how mixed-use (learning and living) spaces can promote creativity, safety, and innovation in higher education. The project is a study for a satellite campus where a population of 60 students can both live and learn. This educational space will give students the chance to organize their learning experiences with their living-working environments. This proposal removes the boundaries between campus and off-campus experiences, while promoting order, simplicity, and organization.
The project has been designed to take advantage of natural light in two significant ways. The residential units are located on the south side of the building, so that the residents can enjoy southern light. To control for heat, the south elevation has a gridded facade which is thicker and has smaller apertures. The working spaces are located on the north side of the building to provide even light. This facade is a thinner gridded wall with a much larger aperture. The short West and East elevations also follow rules for maximizing daylight efficiency.
The project also investigates the architectural theory of the grid, in its ability to provide both order and freedom in a project. This project used the grid and the idea of “Order and disorder” to accommodate the ordered educational expectations of the institution versus the students’ own disordered lives and inputs. For the project I researched and documented through photography the daily lives, belongings, habits, outfits, and bedrooms of more than 30 students. The result of this research is a beautiful disorder showcasing the individuality of this building’s future users.
